Rockliffe Hall secures approval to establish 'World-Class' culinary destination

Rockcliffe Hall in County Durham has received approval for the initial phase of an extensive redevelopment project.

The five-AA-red-star hotel aims to establish itself as a 'world-class, gastronomy-focused destination,' led by culinary director James Close, former chef patron of the two-Michelin-starred Raby Hunt.

Darlington Council has now granted approval for the hotel to construct a 584 sq.m pavilion, which will feature a restaurant with an open kitchen managed by Close.

Rockliffe Hall is still awaiting a decision on a second planning application to renovate the hotel’s Grade II-listed Old Hall and enhance its guest rooms and facilities.

Shauna Robb, general manager at Rockliffe Hall, described the planning approval as an “exciting new phase” for the hotel, solidifying its position as a “luxury, gastronomy-led destination.”

Robb said: “We are focused on placing the resort hotel and the North East of England firmly on the hospitality map, attracting travellers from around the globe, and we thank Darlington Council for supporting the application.”

Construction of the new restaurant building is scheduled to commence in February 2025. During this time, the New Hall accommodation, golf course, Clubhouse, spa, and Terra restaurant will continue to operate as usual.

Close became part of the hotel team in February 2024 after the closure of the Raby Hunt.
