Blacklock set to open first restaurant in Birmingham

Blacklock is set to open its first restaurant in Birmingham this autumn.

The chophouse group will convert the ground floor of St Philip's House in the city centre into a 100-seat restaurant and bar.

This will be Blacklock's seventh restaurant since it was founded by former lawyer Gordon Ker in a Soho basement in 2015.

Since then, Blacklock has expanded with the opening of Blacklock City in 2017, Blacklock Shoreditch in 2018, Blacklock Covent Garden in 2022, and Blacklock Canary Wharf in 2023. The group also launched its first regional restaurant in Manchester last year.

The Birmingham menu will feature a range of steaks and chops cooked over charcoal, along with Blacklock’s signature white cheesecake dessert, which is served by waiters directly at the table.

Ker said: “10 years on from that shoestring conversion of an old Soho basement, we’re very excited to be embarking on the restoration of one of the most beautiful buildings in Birmingham.

“The city’s vibrant culture and thriving local food scene has meant we’ve always wanted to call it home. We’ve looked high and low for the perfect spot and St Philip’s House has such a rich history with plenty of stories to tell. We’re looking forward to bringing it back to life, becoming part of the local community and filling the restaurant with plenty of happy guests.”

Blacklock received B Corp certification in 2023 and plans to collaborate with new suppliers in the Midlands to source ingredients for fresh dishes and drinks on the Birmingham menu.
