The Danish Japanese restaurant group Sticks’n’Sushi, renowned for its distinctive blend of quality sushi and grilled sticks, will debut its 14th UK location in Islington this September.
This marks the brand’s first venture into North London and reflects Sticks’n’Sushi’s strategic expansion plan to reach further into London’s residential neighborhoods, following the successful launch in Richmond this past May.
Islington's design is unique yet distinctly Sticks’n’Sushi, featuring a spacious open-plan dining room, kitchen counter, lounge, bar, and outdoor seating. Designed by the brand’s longstanding Berlin-based designers, Diener & Diener, the space blends Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian elegance, incorporating elements that reflect the residential character of the area.
The restaurant consists of two single-storey buildings that collectively form an inviting and spacious environment. Its distinctive timber and glass façade allows ample natural daylight and a visual link to the street. Inside, abstract pendant lighting, natural furnishings, and warm, earthy tones of yellow and muted greys contribute to a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere. This ambiance mirrors the renowned Japanese concept of ‘Omotenashi’ – wholeheartedly caring for every guest.
The new 120-cover, double-fronted, 3,500 sq. ft restaurant will open daily in Upper Street, a vibrant dining hotspot overlooking Islington Green. Known for its high-quality, fresh offerings, the menu will feature modern sushi, salads, and grilled sticks. Signature dishes include favorites like the Black Cod house roll – miso-marinated black cod with vegetable chips & pickled red onion. Set menus cater to various tastes and budgets. The food menu is complemented by a wide selection of drinks, including cocktails, sake, and Japanese teas.
Andreas Karlsson, Sticks’n’Sushi Group CEO said: “We’re delighted to be bringing Sticks’n’Sushi and our exceptional guest experience to North London this September, creating 50 jobs locally for existing and new fishes to join the Sticks’n’Sushi family. Islington’s Upper Street is a prime location and bustling dining destination, a perfect addition for our energetic and contemporary brand. We look forward to welcoming the local community as well as attracting those from the nearby neighbourhoods of Hampstead, Belsize Park and Highgate.”
Founded in Copenhagen, Sticks’n’Sushi is a well-established and cherished restaurant group from Denmark. It was created by half-Danish, half-Japanese brothers Jens and Kim Rahbek along with Thor Andersen, and now includes 28 restaurants across Copenhagen, Berlin, and the UK.
