A top restaurateur, who worked his way up from kitchen porter to chief executive, has been appointed chairman of Suffolk coffee brand Paddy & Scott's.
The company is optimistic that James Horler, described as a 'standout figure in the UK hospitality industry,' will help propel it to new heights.
Starting from the bottom, James rapidly advanced through the ranks at the THF Hotels group, becoming the youngest management trainee to secure an apprenticeship.
He played a key role in the development of Frankie & Benny’s in the 1990s and led a management buy-in of La Tasca for £28 million in 2001.
He took the company public and later sold it for £134 million.
As chief executive of Ego Restaurants, he spearheaded industry-leading growth, culminating in the company's sale to Mitchells & Butlers in June 2023.
He has received numerous accolades, including an Acorn Award, The Catey for Group Restaurateur, and The Hero and Icon Award, in recognition of his dedication to fostering talent in the hospitality industry.
Paddy & Scott's chief executive, Jon Reed, expressed that they were 'thrilled' to welcome someone of James' calibre to the team.
Reed said: 'His passion for people and unique expertise in growing great companies that really stand for something are perfectly aligned with our ethos and ambitions.'
Horler said: “The potential at Paddy & Scott’s is uncapped, and its formula to help other hospitality operators increase their coffee sales is highly attractive,' he said.
'With so many challenges coming our way, working with partners that can drive increased sales is a great help.
'The impact is a critical advantage, especially in today’s challenging environment. Furthermore, their commitment to fairer trade practices and supporting coffee-growing communities is genuinely inspiring.”
