Asda is accelerating its expansion into the convenience sector, with plans to open 25 new c-stores nationwide by the end of the year.
The supermarket giant announced that the new c-stores will open between June and December, aligning with its strategy to reach more consumers in town and city centres.
The new stores will include former Co-op locations, following Asda's acquisition of 478 convenience sites from Co-op and EG Group over the past two years.
The new expansion drive follows a slowdown in the grocer's convenience store openings last year. In 2024, just 12 new stores were launched, missing the initial target of 30 and well below the 81 stores opened in 2023.
In recent years, the supermarket chain has faced challenges with its market share, which has fallen from 14.8% in 2021 to 10.4% last month.
According to Kantar figures for the 12 weeks ending 23 March, German discounter Aldi overtook Asda for the first time, with a market share of 10.6%, compared to Asda's 10.4%.
